The Product Design Department at Putney High School is a vibrant and dynamic centre of creativity. As part of the newly formed Creative Visual Arts and Technology Faculty – bringing together Textiles, Art, Design Thinking and Computer Science – we deliver a relevant, future focused and innovative curriculum. Our aim is to develop deep creative thinkers and the makers of the future through intellectually stimulating and challenging learning experiences.

Practical problem solving lies at the heart of our approach. Students benefit from excellent workshop facilities, specialist equipment and the expertise of a highly skilled full-time technician. Our studios provide an exciting hub for cross material prototyping, offering the technologies (Bambu Lab, Formlabs 3D printers, Flux Beamo laser cutter) and environment needed to foster ambitious design practice grounded in a culture of creativity and STEAM.

From the very beginning of their journey at Putney, students are immersed in design enquiry. In Key Stage Three, projects span metalwork, CAD/CAM, electronics and timber joinery. At GCSE, pupils can study AQA Design and Technology, progressing to AQA Product Design at A Level. The Creative Visual Arts and Technologies Faculty recorded exceptional outcomes last year, with all GCSE students awarded grades 7-9, and an impressive 54% achieving grade 9. At A Level, the department continues to perform at the highest standard, maintaining 78% A-A*. The achievement of six A grades* underscores the department’s exemplary academic excellence.

Product Design at Putney thrives far beyond the classroom. Our extensive co curricular programme encourages students to pursue design independently and collaboratively. The weekly Product Design Club – led by our own Design Scholars – offers challenge and enrichment for pupils, with a particular focus on upcycling and creative problem solving. All Sixth Formers benefit from weekly Futures seminars to support the development of their design portfolios for university and work experience applications.

The department has an excellent record of success in the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme, and our A Level students consistently achieve strong outcomes. Many progress to competitive STEAM degrees, with recent destinations including Central Saint Martins, Cambridge and Durham, as well as leading international universities.

We are seeking an outstanding Teacher of Product Design to join our forward thinking, highly skilled and welcoming department. We offer a rich and challenging curriculum to bright, curious young designers, supported by superb in house professional development and the extensive opportunities available across the GDST. We are well placed to support both Early Career Teachers and experienced practitioners alike.
